The last VFP-62 Commanding Officer
Capt. Morris (Mo) L. Hayes
Born in Birmingham, Alabama on August 31, 1930, raised in Sebring, Florida. Education includes B.S. in Electrical Engineering - Auburn University; M.S. in Management - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and B.A. in Accounting - University of West Florida.
Commisioned as Ensign, USN on March 15, 1952 upon graduation from Auburn, served aboard a San Diego-based destroyer until ordered to flight training.
Received wings in 1954 and reported to Fighter Squadron 143 at Miramar.
Other tours were: flight instructor in Pensacola, War College at Newport R.I. , several fighter squadrons, and various shore duties before reporting to VFP-62 in 1964.
As Commanding officer of VFP-62, regretfully executed its decommissioning in 1968.
Following Seventh Fleet staff tour, came Navigator in USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14), OpNav staff, Professor of Naval Science at Duke University, and finally CO of NPC, Anacostia.
Upon completing Navy service in 1980, qualified for a Certified Public Accountant license and commenced a second career in banking, specializing in financial analysis.
After twelve years in Commercial Banking, became Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Treasurer for the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation Inc. in Pensacola.
Wife of 55 years is June Hankins Hayes. The couple has four grown children.
